Are you wondering what to do this Friday for St-Jean family fun? Here’s a great kid-friendly event in Lac Brome that you won’t want to miss: the soapbox race! Having been last year with my 3 year old, I can just say we loved it! My son is still talking about it, and really what is not to love?
Watching young local kids zoom down the steep Lakeside hill in brightly colored homemade soapbox cars is a total rush! Besides the fact that I’m amazed that it’s even allowed, in a world of helicopter parenting, asepticized everything & political correctness. Honestly I find it refreshing & thrilling. Go Knowlton for reviving childhood traditions that actually give local kids a fun way to take back the street.
Watching their clenched, serious faces as their contraptions race, shaking and swerving, down the street is quite the suspense. One of the kid drivers actually lost control, nearly wiping out, managing to stop at the last minute by crashing into a protective car tire on the sidelines. Whew! The kid was all right, although visibly shaken. The audience and his family were very supportive. You can see that even though it’s a race, it is above all a community event.
The soapbox cars themselves are also quite beautiful & ingenious. There is no doubt that these kids and their families spent many hours designing, building, testing and decorating them. The whole process is certainly a great learning experience, from developing the project to participating in the race. As for the audience, it’s just great St-Jean family fun to watch & cheer on the drivers. Good luck to all!
The race takes place on Friday 24 June, from 9 am to 12 pm, on Lakeside road in downtown Knowlton.
Many other festivities are planned, so please check out the event’s Facebook page here.
